It gathers the best collection of Spanish painting, the most important works of Flemish and Italian painting, and remarkable examples of the German, French and English schools. Although the museum was created to house painting and sculpture, it also has important collections of drawings, engravings, coins and medals, and pieces of sumptuary and decorative arts.The museum’s surface area increased by more than 50 percent in 2007 with the expansion designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. The new space includes four halls for temporary exhibitions, the restored cloister of the iglesia de los Jerónimos, a large reception hall for visitors, an auditorium with seating for 438 people, as well as various facilities for the storage and restoration of works of art.
